Birthday Road Trip Day 1

October 22, 2011
Starting Location: Fort St. James, BC
Clue:
This special place will start us on our way,
Think back to the East overlooking the big bay
_ _ _ _
_ _ _ _ _ _ _

Well, this clue had me thinking of all the places Mark and I had visited that overlooked water. There is a lot of them. And when you live in the west of the country, most of these places are to the east. But there is one that stands out. (and fits the spaces). Cape Spencer, New Brunswick. A little lighthouse just outside Saint John, where Mark first told me he loved me. So using the letters from the answer and the conversion A=26; B=25; C=24; ...; Y=2; Z=1, I ended up with co-ordinates of where to go
N 57o 23.105'
W 122o 50.615'

Looking on a map - Buckinghorse River Provincial Park (north eastern British Columbia).

So we got in the car and started to drive the ~800 km to Buckinghorse River Provincial Park. Now to get there, we had to drive through the Pine Pass, which, being in the mountains, is susceptible to sudden changes in weather (or at least the signs say). Parts of the drive were pretty snowy. We even saw a tractor-trailer and dump truck collision in the ditch. Good thing we didn't go through the day before though. People were telling us there were many major accidents during that first snow fall of the season. We just took our time and stopped for coffees in the various little towns.

And let's be honest... it wasn't snowy the whole way.

It was the longest day of driving for our road trip and we got into Buckinghorse River P.P. in the dark. And surprise, surprise - the gate was closed for the season. Well, it was dark and the map didn't show any other nearby campsites. So we pitched our tent on the driveway in front of the snowy gate and made some dinner. Turkey soup never tasted so good. A great start to the adventure :)
